I am starting up a small engine business again and will record my work on video. Today I am working on an old 3,000 watt gas generator which has not been used in a long time.
I first checked the oil and it was very bad. It is thick sludge and very low. The poor engine was last used with this horrible oil residue inside the crankcase. So I fear this may be an oil burner when I get it running if any damage has been done by the bad oil.
I had to remove the gas line and drain the old gas out. It was thick varnish and there was no fuel shut off valve so that means it was in the carb too.
I took off the air filter and sprayed some carburetor cleaner to see if the engine would fire. I pulled the starter and it did burn it. This means it has good spark. That is a good sign.
When I removed the screw from the carb fuel bowl, thick green sludge came out of if. I have never seen such thick green stuff before. Old gas, yes but not so thick and green.
I took off the carburetor and cleaned it out using carb cleaner and an air compressor. I let it soak for a while and hit it some more. I used a fine wire to get into all the small holes and pores in the carburetor to make sure I got it cleaned up enough.
I had to change the oil as well. After I get this engine running a while I will change it again to make sure I get all the metal shavings out of the crankcase to ensure longer engine life.
When I got the carburetor back on the engine I tried to pour some gas into the carb through the fuel line but it was not going easy. I will have to buy some fuel line and replace the entire line between the gas tank and the carburetor. Then I can try to fire this old machine up again.
Once I get it running I will then start testing the generator itself to make sure it is running properly.
This will be a two part video so stay tuned for the rest later on.
