The Do It Yourself World
Join us and follow along as we strive to become fully self sufficient and off the grid on our 18 acre homestead in the woods. My wife Melanie, our daughter Michelle, and I moved in the spring of 2017 to our new homestead in Northern lower Michigan.
We are surrounded by wild State forest land teaming with wildlife. For many, this is vacation paradise. For us, this is home. There are very few full time people around, which ads to the wildness and the beauty of the area. This also leaves us pretty much alone in the quiet and peaceful forest.
We are raising chickens for meat, eggs and for some extra money to help pay the bills. We grow our own food to help offset the cost of groceries. We hunt and fish for meat as needed and to stock up for the harsh winter months.
We hope to become more and more independent of the grocery stores with time and eventually become fully self sufficient.
We are putting up solar panels and battery backup systems to power our meager needs in our off grid tiny house. We use primarily wood heat to keep us warm in the cold winter months.
I spent the second half of the day working on my electric fence line. I plan to run the electric fence around our entire front property and up to 8 feet high to prevent anything from a coyote to a deer from coming into our land.
We want to protect our daughter from coyotes and ticks, our chickens from predators and our garden from deer. This fence should do the job when I am finished.
I ran three strands of wire on the T posts for now. I ran two strands out into the forest along the side of our land. I have to cut the brush down before I can put in the lower strand. Later I want to put one more strand even higher at 8 feet to prevent deer from jumping over.
While I was working I was interrupted by my neighbor who comes by spying on us all day, every day. Today I happened to be recording my work when he came by clearly recording us. Finally I got him on camera.
After the disturbance was over, I got back to work again. I worked until nearly dark. I later put up no trespassing signs on the fence wires to both show that there are wires here and to mark our land clearly.
