A walk through our property, greenhouses and gardens to see how things are doing this year on the homestead.
Our raised bed greenhouse based on Hugelkultur is the best that we have ever had to date. The vegetables in there are growing very fast and very well. The soil is full of nutrients and retains moisture nicely.
In contrast the normal gardens are failing due to the harsh elements and the wildlife attacking them. The soil here is sandy and does not retain heat or moisture. The animals are always trying to eat our garden before we get to it ourselves.
Our raised beds in the greenhouse have been providing us with food for a while now. We have lettuce in our sandwiches every day and we sometimes have full salads for lunch. The squash is ready to harvest and we have been harvesting chili peppers for a while now. And tomatoes too.
The small herb greenhouse is not doing well due to the intense cold of the past winter. We had colder days for a longer period than normal. Which also killed most of our orchard fruit trees this year.
From now on though we will be growing our vegetables in the raised beds in the greenhouse. At least there we can fully control the growing conditions.
