I have an old Compaq Presario 1240 that I want to use as a basic website browser in our store. I want a simple web based POS cash register which is light, portable and energy efficient. An old laptop seems like the perfect solution.
But with windows 98, a 233 Mhz Pentium M processor and only 64 Mb of RAM, this is not an easy task.
When I try to open up the old Windows Explorer, I can search Google but not much else. I cannot open any modern websites at all.
I can check the weather using Google or browse for images. But as for online browsing, that is the limit.
This old laptop does have some decent, and at one time expensive, software installed.
There is also Microsoft Works but I have honestly never used that software before. I always used OpenOffice for my office work.
If all you need is an office computer with very basic online work such as downloading emails into a pc based email program or checking the weather then this old computer will still get the job done.
But for today's modern websites, I cannot get it to work.
I am going to try this out with some various Linux versions and see if I can get this antique laptop to get online.
Stay tuned for updates as I try to bring new life into this old computer.
