I made a budget chick brooder using materials I got for free or next to nothing. This is cat proof and prevents chicken bedding and filth from getting on the floor of our house.

I am using an old dog kennel we got for a few dollars at a garage sale. I am not sure but we have three of them and some we got for free. This could be free or cheap. Either way it was not much.

These come with a convenient slide out plastic tray on the bottom for easy cleaning and changing of the litter. Its perfect for raising chicks.

I used hardware cloth I got for free last year to cover the bottom few inches to prevent the cats from reaching in to the birds and hurting them. This also prevents most of the pine shavings we use as bedding from getting on the floor of our house.

I used cardboard in the past but this gets nasty fast and has to be changed all the time. The hardware cloth is permanent.

I fastened the hardware cloth on with zip ties and then clipped off the ends.

Inside our off grid tiny house I put the chicks inside while Michelle happily watched on. She loves the birds. Then I put in food and water and we were done.

Later I put the entire thing on upside down milk crates next to the wood stove so do not even need a light to keep them warm.
