We are building a split rail fence using materials we have on our homestead. This is a simple fence with very little work involved once we figured out how we wanted it.

The most time consuming part of the job was getting the first pieces in place and figuring out what height we wanted.

In the first half of the video I went out into the woods on our homestead and cut some dead standing trees into logs to use as legs for our fence.

Then I shaved off the bark from the logs and hauled them over to our work area.

Melanie helped me get the first two sets of legs in place. I used wire to wrap the legs together but I am planning to use wood pegs instead. Then we got a couple boards in place to see how it looked.

But at our original plan of 4 feet high, it was just too tall. It was too much in your face. This is our front yard and people pass by from down the road. We do not want it to look bad or like a farm field. So I cut them down to 3 feet high. I think it looks good now.

I managed to get another section up giving us 18 feet of fence line before the rain came down and I had to scramble to put away my tools.

Although it did not look like much on film, this was a full day of work. I had to haul the logs out of the woods and across our property by hand and it was exhausting.
