Updates on our solar power chest freezer/fridge combo after testing during a 24 hour period using a Kill-A-Watt meter.

I could not believe my eyes at first when I saw that the newly converted solar powered fridge was only using 90 watts of power when the compressor was running.

I had set up the meter at a certain time of the day and came back exactly 24 hours later to find that we only used 0.32 KWH of power. That is unbelievable. This is so incredibly energy efficient.

I just cant believe that manufacturers are not using this simple technology to improve standard fridge efficiency. A more heavily insulated refrigerator will hold the cold air in longer, reducing the time that the compressor must run.

Of course using a top load fridge takes some getting used to but then again, this ads even more energy savings because cold air is heavier than warm and so it sinks to the bottom of the fridge and cannot fall out when you open the door like on a front open appliance.

I think that I can run our new freezer/fridge conversion off a single solar panel and a deep cycle battery. I think I will try that one day so stay tuned for more experiments.
