We are hauling 2-3 loads of fire wood and logs to the off grid homestead every day now. People are giving us wood for free. My viewers are asking me why I do not charge for taking the wood and cleaning up properties.

The answer is quite simple. There are a lot of homes around here heating with fire wood so there is a lot of competition for free wood. If we charged for taking trees and wood then we would lose out on most of it. We need fire wood so we will take what we can get for free and be thankful for it.

Chris and I have done the math on the costs of hauling a load of fire wood. It is averaging us about $7 per load. That comes out to roughly a face cord per truck load.

It takes us 1-2 hours to load a face cord into the truck. That includes cutting and carrying the logs and cleaning up afterward.

A face cord costs $70 on average right now cut, split and dried.

If you count time as money, it would be worth about $15.75 per hour if we were to sell the fire wood next season after it is all dry. There is also the time spent splitting and stacking the fire wood but it averages out because some loads only take an hour to get on the truck and get home and I am counting two hours total per face cord.

Next year we may consider selling fire wood. But for now we need all we can get for heating our off grid tiny house.
