Filling our Hugelkultur type raised greenhouse grow beds. We are using a layer of tree branches, rotting tree material and scrap lumber on the bottom couple feet of space.

This provides fill material and also some decomposing material which will heat up the entire pile and extend our growing season. As the material rots through the years we will be adding more layers on top. This will always give the plants plenty of nutrients to grow in.

On top of the scrap wood we put a thick layer of leaves and pine needles. This will help fill in the gaps in between the wood scraps.

Next I put on some sawdust which is over a year old and helps to weigh down the other materials below. It will also hold the topsoil from filtering through as easily.

Next came a layer of rotting tree bark. This is like an aged mulch which is loaded with worms. That means it is healthy and good for the plants.
