We got a nearly brand new refrigerator/freezer combo which only uses 130 watts the other day for free.
When I saw this on the road for some reason I stopped to ask the owner about it because it looked brand new. I dont stop to look at appliances on the side of the road because usually they are junk. But this looked new.
The owner said his wife wanted her drinks to be nearly freezing and this fridge did not do that. Although it was in an occasional use cabin and was hardly used, she got a new one. This went by the road to be given away. He had just listed it online for someone to come pick it up when I arrived.
I took a risk and brought it home because it only uses 130 watts and can probably be run on solar power.
Our current solar powered fridge is a chest freezer with a thermostat control to make it into a solar refrigerator. This uses hardly any power at all to run. But it fills up with water and is messy and awkward to use. You have to dig to get things out and often something tips over on you making a worse mess.
With a real solar powered refrigerator/freezer combo we can have a normal life again but still be on solar power.
I plugged it in and sure enough it works fine so we swapped out our food. Melanie is very very happy to have her new fridge. And I am happy that I can run the fridge on solar power.
I will see if I can run this refrigerator on a single solar panel and a battery as an experiment.
